EU Biodiversity Strategy

The EU wants to counteract the decline in biodiversity and is committed to restoring nature and preserving biodiversity.

Objectives:

Effective protection and networking of all ecologically valuable habitats Restoration of ecosystems that are particularly important for biodiversity and climate protection

The strategy presented by the Commission in May 2020 contains the following measures:

Protected areas are to be created on at least 30% of land and marine areas

A series of commitments, such as the reduction of pesticides by 50% by 2030 and the planting of 3 billion trees, are intended to help restore damaged ecosystems

20 billion is allocated annually for the protection and promotion of biodiversity

In Austria, the objectives and measures formulated by the European Union have been taken up in a ten-point programme. The aim is to protect biodiversity in Austria and actively tackle the threats to it:

Improving the status and trends of species and habitats.
Effective protection and networking of all ecologically valuable habitats.
Restoration of ecosystems that are particularly important for biodiversity and climate protection.
Decisive reduction in land utilisation and fragmentation.
Initiating transformative change in society and mainstreaming biodiversity in all sectors.
Strengthening global engagement.
Improving the legal framework for biodiversity conservation.
Securing funding for biodiversity conservation and support for biodiversity-requiring action.
Appreciation of biodiversity in society and the economy.
Improving the scientific basis for achieving and evaluating biodiversity targets.
